Keyboard

A computer keyboard; the piano one is 🎹. The picture is a flat board with rows of small keys and a long space bar, usually drawn in grey. Platforms don't print readable letters on it, so it works for every language and every layout. It stands for the object, but far more often for what you do with it: typing. An essay, a pile of emails, a coding session, a work-from-home day, a novel in progress.

Next to 💻 or 🖱️ it is simply gear, the way a shopping list or a desk photo would use it. In a bio it tells you the person writes, programs, plays PC games or collects keyboards. The thing it shows is itself a piece of history: the key order on a real desktop keyboard comes straight from typewriters, which is why English-speaking countries call it QWERTY after its first six letters, Germany types on QWERTZ and France on AZERTY.

What does it mean when someone sends ⌨️?

Usually: "wait, I'm typing something longer." Unlike the automatic "typing…" indicator, this one is sent on purpose. It promises a reply worth waiting for: an explanation, a story, a rant. It also shows up as a quick "back at my desk" or "working" when someone can't chat.

It can tease. Aimed at someone who argues furiously online, ⌨️ can hint at a "keyboard warrior", a person who picks fights from behind a screen and would never do so face to face. The words around it make the difference, so if you only mean "I'm typing", add them.
