xiangqi red mandarin

Xiangqi Red Mandarin

86/98

🩡 is the red advisor, or guard, in xiangqi (Chinese chess): it protects the general inside the palace. It moves one point diagonally and cannot leave that area. Some fonts show it as a Chinese character, others as a picture.

Text symbol

What 🩡 means

It guards the general inside the palace. In xiangqi (Chinese chess), the advisor moves one point diagonally and cannot leave the palace, the marked 33 area around the general.

Shilin Guangji, an illustrated Chinese reference book, includes Xiangqi diagrams in its 1330–33 edition. Northern Song bronze Xiangqi pieces show Chinese characters on one face and pictures on the other, evidence that both design traditions are old.

Why do red and black use different characters?

Red usually uses 仕; black usually uses 士. Both mark the same defensive role, and some sets use 士 on both sides. English names vary: advisor and guard are common, while minister and mandarin also appear. Here, “mandarin” names a game piece, not a person or official.

In Chinese, these characters distinguish the sides on many sets. The pieces still perform the same role in play.

Why does the symbol change between fonts?

A font may show a character or a picture. One typeface can display a written form while another shows a pictured game tile. Both designs represent the same Xiangqi piece.

In Xiangqi records, board diagrams, and position discussion, it identifies this red defender. In casual messages it is niche, so name the game when readers may not recognize the symbol.

Specialized and game-specific; it reads as a technical reference.

“Mandarin” names the Xiangqi piece here, not a person or government official.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 🩡 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
