What 士 means
士 names a person or social role, not one fixed job. “Scholar character” captures one strand; “warrior character” captures another. Its form and uses evolved within Chinese writing, rather than as a separately designed emblem.
Early forms appear on bronze objects from China’s late Shang dynasty, followed by Western Zhou examples. An axe-like shape associated with a warrior is one interpretation, not a settled origin. Later, Warring States texts use 士 for cultivated or morally serious people; Han-era manuscripts preserve both military and scholarly senses.
The Han dictionary Shuowen analyzes 士 through 一, “one,” and 十, “ten.” This later explanation of the character’s construction does not prove what its earliest form pictured.
Does 士 mean samurai?
In Japanese, it can—but that is not its only meaning. Japanese usage also includes a man, soldier, or qualified person. Korea’s seonbi scholars, China’s educated elite, and Japan’s bushi warriors share connections with Confucian traditions of learning and moral conduct, but are not interchangeable social titles.
If someone sends you 士 alone, ask which language or word they mean. Translate a longer expression as a whole: a military reading may fit one word and misread an academic title.
In words naming roles or qualifications, 士 can be ordinary vocabulary rather than a grand historical title.
Do not translate every 士 as “samurai.” Check the language and full word.

1Why does 士 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
