What 壪 means
Type wan in Chinese Pinyin and select 壪; Cangjie uses GVFN.
Pinyin input gives 壪 and 塆 the same reading, wān (“wahn,” high and level), so check the selected character. A font can change its strokes without changing the text character.
What does 壪 mean in a place name?
It names a small level place among mountains, or a village there.
In Chinese, 壪 is a regional geographic word for a flat patch in a mountain hollow. Chinese family genealogies from 1597 and 1633 use 塆; a 1736 Yunnan gazetteer, a regional record book, includes 壪 in 波羅壪.
How is 壪 related to 塆?
塆 is the simplified counterpart of 壪, with the same reading.
In 2010, Hubei's office for local gazetteers (regional history books) noted place names written with 塆, 湾, and 弯, and recommended 塆 for village and township names. That documents local spelling practice; it does not make 湾 or 弯 alternate forms of 壪.
壪 reads as a regional Chinese place-name word, not a casual chat character.
Keep the locally recorded form in a place name; 湾, 灣, and 弯 are different characters, not substitutes for 壪.
