What ♕ means
It marks the white queen or one of her moves.
The queen descends from a weaker royal adviser. Early Indian chess had such an adviser; Persian chess called it a vizier, or royal minister, and it could move only one square diagonally. Arabic chess sets retained that identity. A Swiss manuscript from around 1000 is the earliest known European reference to a chess queen, who still moved just one square diagonally.
Figurine notation replaces piece initials with symbols showing the chess pieces. In it, ♕ can stand where Q appears in standard English algebraic notation, so the score does not depend on a language-specific initial.
When did the queen gain her sweeping moves?
Spanish sources describe them in the late 15th century.
The new range spread through European chess writing. The queen’s reach belongs to chess’s later history, not the game’s beginning.
In a score, ♕ is precise game notation; in casual messages it lends a chess, strategy, or royal tone.

2Does ♕ by itself give the full move?
No. It identifies the queen; the rest of the notation supplies the destination square or other details of the move.
Why does ♕ look different in my document?
It can. ♕ is a text character: the active font draws its outline, and a fallback font may use a different design.
