What 𐺈 means
It marks a “ch” sound with a brief catch in the throat.
In modern Latin transliteration, it is written ç’. The mark distinguishes it from the plain “ch” sound of 𐺇 Yezidi Chim.
When do the earliest Yezidi manuscripts date from?
Two religious manuscripts often discussed as early witnesses are Maṣḥafā Reš and Ktébī Jelwa; both appeared in publications in 1911. Their own dates and authorship are uncertain: proposed dates range from the 12th–14th centuries to as late as the 19th century.
One presents a monologue by Tawûsê Melek, while the other tells how the world began. The writing’s later history is unclear. In 2013, the Spiritual Council of Yezidis in Georgia backed a revival for prayers, sacred books, letterhead, and heraldry, adapting the alphabet for modern Kurmanji.
How does modern Yezidi writing differ?
It adds vowel letters and leaves letters unjoined.
The alphabet runs right to left. Older Yezidi writing focused on consonants and followed an order based on Perso-Arabic practice. Kurmanji can also be written in Latin, Cyrillic, or Arabic scripts.
Formal and heritage-specific: Yezidi-script writing appears in religious and community settings, including prayers, sacred books, letterhead, heraldry, and temple inscriptions.
Do not substitute 𐺇: it is the plain-ch letter, while 𐺈 marks the throat-caught sound.
