yezidi letter cim

Yezidi Letter Cim

7/47

𐺆 is the Yezidi letter for the sound at the start of English “jam.” It appears inside Yezidi-script words and in alphabet examples. Its written history is disputed, while a modern Georgian adaptation serves religious and institutional writing.

What 𐺆 means

It is the voiced counterpart of the “ch” in “chip.” For the Yezidi Cim pronunciation, say “ch” with your voice on, as in “jam”; modern comparison tables write the sound with Latin c.

In running text, it writes Kurmanji, the northern variety of Kurdish, in Yezidi script. By itself, Cim is best read as a letter sample or pronunciation aid.

What is the history of Yezidi script?

Its origin and early record are disputed. The 2019 Unicode proposal gives estimates from the 13th–14th to the 17th–18th centuries and says the author is unknown. The earliest widely documented modern evidence is the 1911 publication of the Yezidi religious books Maṣḥaf Raš and Ktébī Jalwe; their original manuscripts are lost, and their date, authorship, and authenticity remain disputed.

The surviving record has a long gap into the early 2000s. In 2013, the Yezidi community in Georgia began a modern revival, adding vowels to the older consonantal script and adjusting some sound values for modern Yezidi. The script appears in prayers, sacred books, institutional letterhead, and heraldry, including a prayer book published in 2018. A comparison table pairs Cim with Arabic ج and Latin c for the same sound; this is a phonetic match, not evidence of descent.

How do I type Yezidi Cim?

A Yezidi keyboard layout can enter the letter directly. For repeated writing, choose a Yezidi input layout. The script runs right to left, and its letters stand apart rather than joining like Arabic.

Specialized and formal: it marks Yezidi-script writing, including religious and institutional use in the Georgian revival.
