yi syllable cy

Yi Syllable Cy

In Nuosu, ꋌ can mean “wash” or “rinse,” or work as a third-person pronoun; the sentence decides. In a message, it is one syllable of Yi text, so a lone ꋌ does not reveal which reading is intended. Its written form belongs to the Liangshan standard, one regional Yi writing tradition.

What ꋌ means

It can mean “wash/rinse” or a third-person pronoun.

In the standard Liangshan Nuosu spelling, the syllable is written cy in Latin letters. Nuosu dictionaries record ꋌ for a word meaning “wash; rinse” and for a third-person pronoun.

Surrounding words and sentence structure settle the reading. When a message contains ꋌ alone, treat it as one syllable of Yi text, not a complete sentence.

How did Yi writing develop?

Yi writing developed across regional traditions over a long history.

Finds in Guizhou have been proposed as evidence from the Western Han or early third-century period. Clearer surviving examples include a bronze bell dated 1485 and paper or sheepskin manuscripts from around 1500.

Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, kept and recited manuscripts for funerals, healing, exorcism, divination and ancestor rites. The modern Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 to reduce variation among local forms and better match modern pronunciation. It draws on older Northern Yi forms and is used in official documents, newspapers and literature; its scope is the Liangshan dialect.

A Nuosu syllable whose reading depends on context; by itself, it does not say much as a message.

Don’t translate ꋌ alone as “wash”: it can also be a third-person pronoun.

It can be either. Nuosu dictionaries record ꋌ for “wash; rinse” and for a third-person pronoun; the surrounding words and sentence structure decide which reading fits.

Is ꋌ a Chinese character?

No. It belongs to the Liangshan Yi syllabary. Some signs used to sort Yi characters in dictionaries are modeled on parts of Han characters, but ꋌ itself is a Yi syllable.

ꋌ font not showing?

Your font or app may lack Yi coverage. ꋌ is text drawn by fonts; use one that supports the Yi script.
