What ꄷ means
Alone, it has no fixed English gloss.
The ddix pronunciation in Yi Pinyin, a Latin-letter writing system, is roughly “dee” with a rising tone; final x marks that tone.
How did Yi writing change?
This glyph belongs to the standardized Liangshan syllabary.
Traditional Yi writing, also called Cuan or Wei, used local signs that represented ideas, apparently independent of Han writing. One tradition credits Aki with devising it during the Tang dynasty (618–907). The earliest Yi writing that survives is a bronze-bell inscription dated 1485.
The Liangshan syllabary was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980; a Latin-letter scheme began in 1956. It represents Nuosu, one Yi dialect, not every Yi variety.

1Questions people ask
1Why does ꄷ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Yi Syllables block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
