Yi syllable Fap

It writes a Nuosu syllable, not a complete word. Nuosu is a Yi language spoken in Liangshan; fap is the romanized reading of ꃔ, roughly “fa” with a low-falling pitch. Its final p marks that tone rather than a pronounced consonant. A word’s meaning comes from its full sequence of syllables.

Yi writing has older regional traditions; some local forms were used by priestly specialists for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. The earliest securely dated surviving Yi-script example is a bronze-bell inscription from 1485, while earlier beginnings remain debated. The modern Liangshan standard drew on older ideographic traditions: it was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to expand literacy and support textbooks, literature, and newspapers. It represents Nuosu, not every language variety called Yi.
