What ꃓ means
It names a syllable, so context supplies the word’s meaning. Liangshan/Nuosu romanization writes its reading as fa. That Latin spelling labels the syllable; the Yi word comes from the surrounding written text.
Is ꃓ from the old Yi script?
ꃓ belongs to the Liangshan standard, built from older Yi traditions. The oldest reliably dated surviving examples of Yi writing are the 15th-century Chenghua Bell Inscriptions; paper Yi texts survive from around 1500. Earlier texts served bimo, Yi religious specialists, for scripture, legends, history, medicine, astrology, ritual, and genealogies.
The standardization work was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It supported Nuosu literacy in schools and print, including textbooks, arithmetic materials, newspapers, official documents, and literature. This is not a universal Yi script: other regional traditions vary in glyph shapes, sounds, and writing direction, and may not be mutually readable without study.
ꃓ belongs in Nuosu/Yi writing as one syllable within a word or sentence.
Treat fa as a romanized syllable label, not an English translation.
