yi syllable fat

Yi syllable Fat

ꃑ is one syllable in the Liangshan standard of the Yi language Nuosu, and it has no fixed translation by itself. The spelling “fat” is a romanized label: its final t marks high tone, not a separate sound. The surrounding Yi text supplies the word meaning.

What ꃑ means

ꃑ belongs to Nuosu, the Yi language standardized in Liangshan. Its Roman-letter form is “fat”; the final t marks high tone rather than an extra consonant. Like other Yi syllables, it can represent different words depending on context, so the glyph alone cannot settle a translation.

The broader Yi script developed through local forms rather than a single invention. Its earliest surviving monumental evidence is about five centuries old; a bronze bell dated 1485 is an early example. Earlier origins remain debated. Traditional Yi writing served religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts, which bimo—Yi ritual specialists—maintained.

Yi writing has local traditions whose glyph inventories, shapes, orientation, and writing direction can differ. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 for one dialect; it did not replace every Yi writing tradition.

How do I type ꃑ?

Use a Yi input method and select the syllable from its candidates. On Windows, add Yi input, type the syllable’s sounds on an ordinary keyboard, then choose the matching Yi character from the offered choices.

A Yi Syllables keyboard layout is another route for direct entry. A font with Yi coverage is needed to display the result.

Neutral in Yi text; alone, it gives a reader too little context for a translation.

“Fat” is the romanized label, not the syllable’s translation.

Drift: A 2024 interview study found digital Nuosu used mainly for literary and artistic expression and script teaching, rather than ordinary person-to-person messaging.

What if someone sends me ꃑ?

Treat it as Yi text; the syllable alone does not settle a translation. Ask for the surrounding words or a gloss before deciding what the sender meant.

Why does its name contain “fat”?

“Fat” is the romanized syllable label. Its final t marks high tone; it is not pronounced as a separate consonant.

Will every font show ꃑ?

Not in every font. A font with Yi coverage can display it; without that coverage, it may appear as a missing-glyph box.
