What ꃐ means
It writes one spoken syllable in the standard Liangshan Yi script.
In Nuosu romanization, this syllable is written fip, roughly like “fee” with its pitch falling low. The final p marks that pitch pattern, not an extra p sound; the surrounding Yi word or sentence supplies the meaning.
Where did the Nuosu Yi script come from?
It evolved regionally; the standardized Liangshan syllabary came later.
Yi writing has no single agreed origin story. An inscription on a bronze bell dated 1485 is one of the earliest surviving examples. By the Ming period, regional Yi forms were used across eastern Yunnan and western Guizhou.
Older Yi writing served religious, magical, medical, and genealogical work. Bimo priests—ritual specialists who read and copied the texts—passed manuscripts through villages. A Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy. It organizes one Liangshan dialect as a syllabary, a system whose signs represent spoken syllables; it does not cover every Yi variety. Earlier Yi signs that represented ideas appear to have developed independently of Chinese characters.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꃐ show as a square?
The font used to display the message may lack Yi glyph coverage. A square is a missing-glyph display; it does not mean the character itself changed.
