What ꃍ means
It marks a syllable; its word meaning comes from context.
The standard Latin-letter spelling is “fit”: “fi” gives the syllable sound, and final t marks its high, level tone, not a final consonant.
How did the Liangshan Yi script develop?
It standardizes one branch of a much older writing tradition.
Traditional Yi writing (Cuan or Wei) varied locally; until modern times, village specialists passed down religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts. Older signs represented ideas; the standard uses syllable signs.
Purported Yi inscriptions have been dated to the Western Han period (206 BC to AD 9); Unicode dates the earliest surviving example, a bronze bell, to 1485. Devised in 1974 and made official in 1980, the standard supports literacy in Liangshan Yi, not all Yi dialects.
