What ꃎ means

It names one Liangshan Yi syllable.

Is “fix” an English translation? No. It follows the Liangshan Yi romanization, a spelling system using Latin letters, introduced in 1956. Its final x marks the secondary high tone, a pitch pattern in the syllable; it is not pronounced as an English x.

Its role in a sentence depends on the surrounding Yi words; this character alone does not provide an English translation of the sentence.

Why was the Yi script standardized?

To give Liangshan Yi a common written standard.

The earliest Yi script inscriptions are debated: some scholars count pottery, stone, and bronze examples as more than a millennium old, while surviving paper texts date from at least the late Ming. Before standardization, local writing traditions differed. Bimo—ritual specialists who passed on these manuscripts—used them for ceremonies, genealogies (family histories), astrology, historical accounts, and lore.

After 1949, the Chinese label 彝文 (“Yi writing”) became an umbrella term for varied local traditions. The modern Liangshan syllabary—a set of characters that each represent a syllable—was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to reduce local variation and represent Liangshan speech consistently. It serves Liangshan Yi, not every Yi variety; older or local manuscripts may follow a different tradition, so their forms are not automatically interchangeable with this standard.

How do I type ꃎ?

Use a Yi input method with the standardized Liangshan spelling.

If ꃎ appears blank or as a missing-character box, the font may lack Yi coverage; the text still contains this character.

A written Liangshan Yi syllable; read its label within the script’s language, not as an English word.

Here, “fix” is a romanized Yi label, not a command to repair something.

Why does ꃎ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Yi Syllables block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
