Text symbol

What ꆱ means

It represents a Liangshan Yi syllable labeled hlyt.

In standard Nuosu romanization, final t marks a high, level tone. hlyt labels the syllable; it is not a translation, and its lexical meaning comes from the Yi word or sentence around it.

Why are there different Yi script forms?

Yi writing grew through regional traditions before standardization.

Yi origin traditions credit a figure called Aki with creating the script. The oldest surviving dated example is an inscription on a bronze bell from 1485. Yi ritual specialists, called bimo, copied older forms for religious, magical, medical and genealogical writing.

The standardized Liangshan branch drew on older Northern Yi forms. It was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy and a shared public writing system. Other regional Yi traditions have different forms; specialists may find texts from another region hard to read.

Which Yi tradition uses ꆱ?

ꆱ belongs to the standardized Liangshan branch.

It is not a universal sign for every Yi language: other regional traditions have distinct inventories and forms. Yi writing is historically distinct from Han Chinese writing and is not derived from Tibetan, Burmese or Tai scripts, despite the region's shared setting. The Liangshan standard also carries older ritual and epic material into public writing.

Neutral in Yi writing; outside that context, readers need knowledge of the language and syllabary.
