yi syllable ji

Yi syllable ji

995/1165

ꏢ writes a syllable in Liangshan Nuosu, a Yi language; its Latin-letter spelling is ji, which alone is not a whole word. Older local Yi writing served ritual, medical, magical, and family-history texts; the later Liangshan standard was shaped for literacy. A Yi keyboard can enter it through a syllable candidate.

Text symbol

What ꏢ means

It writes one Liangshan Yi syllable; the label alone is not a complete word.

In the standard Latin spelling, ji identifies the syllable. Yi syllables distinguish tones, or pitch patterns: final t, p, and x mark other tones, while ji has the midlevel tone. A lone ꏢ gives no full word or sentence; the surrounding Yi text determines its meaning.

Why does Yi script have older and newer forms?

Yi writing has several local traditions, followed by a modern Liangshan standard.

Traditional Yi writing had many local forms. A bronze-bell inscription dated 1485 is an early surviving example; undated manuscripts may be older. Local ritual specialists called bimo used Yi writing to preserve religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts.

The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to make reading, teaching, and publishing easier. It entered official documents, newspapers, textbooks, and literature. ꏢ belongs to this Liangshan tradition; Yunnan has a separate standard, so the Liangshan set is not universal across Yi communities.

What does it mean if someone sends ꏢ?

Treat a lone ꏢ as one untranslated Yi syllable.

If the sender is writing Nuosu, it may belong to a larger word or sentence. The isolated syllable does not tell you which one; the surrounding Yi text supplies the meaning.

Neutral in Liangshan Yi writing; without surrounding text, it has no clear social tone or complete message.

Do not treat one syllable as a complete reply; the surrounding text supplies the word.
