What ꏣ means
It writes the Yi syllable ji with a low, falling tone.
In Yi Pinyin, jip is the romanized reading: ji starts roughly like the “ch” in “cheese,” but softer. The final p marks the low-falling tone; it is not pronounced.
Yi writing is syllabic: each graph represents a spoken syllable, and words combine syllables. Cuan and Wei are historical labels for related Yi writing traditions, not names for ꏣ. Some claimed Yi inscriptions are dated to the Western Han (206 BCE–9 CE); Unicode cites a bronze bell dated 1485 as a conservative earliest surviving example, and paper and parchment texts from around 1500. Village priests used Yi writing to preserve and guide the reading of religious, medical, magical, and genealogical texts. The modern standardized script was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 from older Liangshan forms, extending their use into official documents, newspapers, and literature.
How do I type ꏣ?
Use a Yi Pinyin keyboard and commit the syllable entry.
On desktop, enter jip and press Space. As of 2026, Windows’ Yi IME accepts phonetic input and offers character candidates; mobile Yi layouts use one key for the consonant and another for vowel plus tone.
Neutral in Yi writing; opaque without context to someone who does not read Yi.
A standalone send to a non-Yi reader needs context or translation.
