yi syllable jjux

Yi Syllable Jjux

1065/1165

ꐨ writes the Nuosu syllable jjux; it does not mean “thought” by itself. Nuosu uses it in ngop jjux (“thought”) and as a word ending for nouns about qualities or extent. A lone send gives you a syllable, not a universal chat meaning.

What ꐨ means

It writes the Nuosu syllable jjux.

In the standard Latin-letter transcription of Nuosu, the final x in jjux marks the secondary-high tone (a pitch pattern), not another consonant. The Nuosu phrase written ngop jjux is translated “thought”; -jjux also forms nouns about a quality or extent. A Nuosu grammar illustrates the ending in ꉌꈲꌧꐨ (“extent of knowing Chinese”) and ꋍꉜꐨ (“his vision”). Interpret the complete word or phrase: ꐨ alone does not mean “thought.”

Where did the Yi script come from?

It grew through local Yi manuscript traditions; its beginnings are debated.

Accounts describe early Yi inscriptions on pottery, stone, bronze, and bone. The earliest reliably dated examples include a bronze bell from the fifteenth century.

Traditional forms were copied by bimo, Yi ritual specialists, for religious and magical rites and texts on medicine, family genealogies, and history. In 1980, a modern Liangshan standard was formally promulgated, recasting older Northern Yi forms as a phonetic syllabary—a set of signs for syllables—for teaching, printing, and public writing. It standardizes writing for Nuosu, a Liangshan Yi language; other Yi regions have distinct writing traditions, so this reading does not automatically apply to every Yi text.

Why might ꐨ show as a box?

A font needs Yi coverage to show the character's intended shape.

Without that coverage, a device may show a placeholder or missing-glyph mark; the display changes, not the text character.

In Liangshan Nuosu writing, ꐨ is a regular syllable; outside a word or phrase, it gives too little context to interpret.

Sent alone? Treat it as a Nuosu syllable, not a universal symbol, and ask for the surrounding word.

Why does ꐨ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
