yi syllable jjop

Yi syllable jjop

1063/1165

ꐦ represents the Liangshan Yi syllable spelled jjop; it is a sound unit, not an English gloss. In Yi writing, its role comes from the word or sentence around it. Sent by itself, it could be a text fragment or a character sample, so don't assign it a reaction without context.

What ꐦ means

It represents a Liangshan Yi syllable, not an English word.

The standard Latin-letter spelling for Liangshan Yi (Yi Pinyin) is jjop. Its final p marks the low-falling pitch pattern, or tone, not an extra consonant; this spelling identifies the syllable but does not translate it.

Traditional Yi writing, historically called Cuan or Wei, used signs for ideas and appears not to derive from Han Chinese characters. One tradition credits Aki with creating it during the Tang dynasty (618–907); the earliest surviving inscription is on a bronze bell dated 1485. There was no single traditional Yi script: local forms differed in glyphs, inventories, and writing direction. Village priests passed manuscripts down for religious, ritual, medical, and genealogical use. The standardized Liangshan form was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980. It is a syllabary, with a sign for each allowed spoken syllable in Liangshan Yi, not a unified script for every Yi dialect.

What should I read when someone sends ꐦ?

Read it as Yi writing before guessing at a mood.

Inside a Yi message, it belongs to the surrounding word or sentence. Sent alone, it could be a syllable fragment or a character sample; ask for its context before treating it as a reaction.

Within Yi text, it is neutral writing. On its own, it gives too little language context to show the sender’s intended meaning.

Is ꐦ an emoji? No: it is a written Yi syllable. Don’t assume a reaction meaning from the glyph alone.
