What ꏱ means
It writes one syllable of the Liangshan Yi language. “jux” is the syllable’s transcription in Latin letters, not a gloss; its meaning depends on the Yi word or sentence around it. Alone, ꏱ has no dependable translation.
How did the Yi script reach this form?
It grew from older, regionally varied Yi writing. Older Yi writing was preserved mainly by bimo, Yi ritual specialists, in religious, magical, medical, genealogical, and related texts. A bell from the 15th century bears the Chenghua Bell Inscriptions, a dated example of this tradition.
In Liangshan, a standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980, reshaping selected older forms into a phonetic syllabary. It represents the Liangshan dialect, not every Yi language.
When should I use ꏱ?
Use it inside Liangshan Yi text. The standardized script is used in official documents, newspapers, literary works, and ritual texts. It represents Liangshan Yi, not all Yi languages. If someone sends ꏱ by itself, read it as a written syllable; without the language and surrounding word, it gives no dependable translation or mood.
Neutral within Yi writing; opaque as a standalone message to readers who do not read Yi.
A lone syllable gives you no dependable translation or mood.
