yi syllable jut

Yi syllable Jut

ꏰ represents one syllable in the Liangshan Yi writing system, used for the dialect spoken by Nuosu communities. In the romanized spelling “jut,” the final t marks the high-level tone, a pitch pattern in Yi; it is not an English translation or a separate t sound. In a message, the surrounding Yi syllables show how it fits into a word.

What ꏰ means

It writes one Liangshan Yi syllable, not a complete word. The romanized label “jut” uses final t to mark the high-level tone, a pitch pattern in Yi; it does not add a separate t sound or give an English translation.

Read the syllable as part of a Yi word or sentence. This character alone cannot tell you the full message.

How did Yi writing change?

Modern Liangshan Yi writing grew from older local Yi scripts. Older writing, historically called Cuan or Wei, varied by region and used signs that could stand for ideas or words. It followed the model of Chinese writing, yet does not appear to be copied from individual Chinese characters. Yi priests called bimo preserved texts for religious writing, legends, history, medicine, and astrology. A traditional account credits a figure named Aki during the Tang dynasty (618–907); the oldest reliably dated surviving examples are bell inscriptions from the 15th century.

The modern Liangshan form was made for the Liangshan dialect. To support literacy, a phonetic syllabary based on older Liangshan forms was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. China adopted it as a national standard in 1991, the basis for Unicode's encoding. It writes one syllable per character and is not a single system for every Yi dialect.

What does it mean when someone sends ꏰ?

Read it as one syllable of Yi text. The character alone is not enough to identify a whole word or sentence. Look at the surrounding Yi text, or ask for it if you need the message translated.

Why does ꏰ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
