What ꏮ means
It writes the Nuosu syllable jo, not a whole word. Nuosu is a Yi language variety spoken in Liangshan; Yi Pinyin is its Latin spelling system. Its j is roughly the light, forward ch at the start of “cheese,” not English j, and jo carries a steady middle tone. The surrounding Yi word or sentence determines the word-level meaning.
Older Yi writing used many local sign forms in religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. Some scholars interpret Guizhou finds as much earlier evidence, but the oldest securely dated Yi writing examples are from the 15th century. A set of bronze-bell texts called the Chenghua Bell Inscriptions includes a bell dated 1485. The modern syllabary drew on classical Yi, the older written tradition, and was standardized in 1974 to support literacy. It records Liangshan Nuosu syllables by sound; the 1974 standard is not one notation for every Yi variety.
What does ꏮ mean when someone sends it?
By itself, it gives you a syllable, not a translation. If someone sends ꏮ alone, it may be a fragment or a character sample. The single syllable cannot identify a word or sentence by itself; ask for the surrounding Yi text.
How to type ꏮ
Enter Yi Pinyin jo, then select the matching candidate. Type the syllable's Latin spelling and choose ꏮ from the Yi candidate list.
Typing and display are separate. Your device also needs a Yi-capable font; otherwise ꏮ may appear as a missing-glyph box.

2Why does ꏮ show as a box?
It can. A font without the Yi glyph may show a missing-glyph box; a font with Yi coverage, such as Noto Sans Yi, can render it. The font changes the display, not the character.
Can I use ꏮ for every Yi language?
No. The standardized syllabary is for Liangshan Nuosu, not one writing system for every Yi variety.
