What ꏭ means
ꏭ is jox, a Liangshan Yi syllable meaning “to” or “towards.” In the romanized spelling used for Nuosu, final x marks the mid-high tone; it is not a separate x consonant.
The Liangshan Yi syllabary was standardized in the 1970s to support literacy. Older Yi writing traditions varied by region; bimo, ritual specialists, used texts for religion, magic, medicine, and genealogy. A bronze-bell inscription from the fifteenth century is among the earliest securely dated surviving evidence of Yi writing.
Historical accounts use “Cuan writing” for an older tradition regarded as an antecedent to later Yi scripts; that broad connection does not establish a direct ancestor for ꏭ. The standardized syllabary is specific to Liangshan speech, while other Yi traditions vary in form and reading, so a reader trained in another tradition may not map this glyph one-to-one.
In Yi text, ꏭ forms part of a word; outside that language context, its meaning may be opaque.
