yi syllable jop

Yi Syllable Jop

1008/1165

ꏯ is a syllable in Liangshan Yi writing; alone, it does not give a complete word meaning. Its romanized label is jop, and the surrounding Yi syllables supply the word. The modern Liangshan standard grew from older local scripts, so this character does not represent every Yi writing tradition.

What ꏯ means

ꏯ is a syllable in the Liangshan Yi writing standard.

The standard’s romanized label is jop; its final p marks a low-falling tone, where the voice drops in pitch. This label identifies the syllable, not a complete word translation; the surrounding Yi text supplies the word’s meaning.

The encoded form targets the Liangshan/Northern Yi standard. Other Yi varieties and older local scripts may differ in sound, shape, or meaning.

How did Yi writing become a standard syllabary?

The earliest reliably dated physical evidence of Yi writing is a bronze-bell inscription from the 15th century; older origin traditions do not provide a comparable dated artifact.

Before standardization, bimo—Yi ritual specialists—mainly kept local writing in manuscripts for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. The Liangshan syllabary, a set of written signs for syllables, aimed to support literacy with a consistent system. Its key dates are 1974 and 1980: it was devised in the first year and officially promulgated in the second.

Its use then expanded into schoolbooks, official documents, newspapers, and other public writing. Modern Liangshan forms developed from older Yi graphs; they are not a direct descendant of Chinese Han characters, and the standard does not represent every Yi variety.

When someone sends ꏯ alone, what should I assume?

Treat it as a piece of Yi writing, not a complete message.

In a Liangshan Yi sentence, read it with the surrounding syllables. In mixed-language chat, a lone ꏯ does not settle a word or reaction; ask which phrase or Yi variety the sender intended.

Neutral written language; its reading depends on Yi variety and surrounding text.

A lone send has no safe English gloss.
