What ꇸ means
It is one syllable in the standardized Liangshan Yi script.
“Kit” is the romanized label for this Yi syllable, not an English gloss. It belongs inside a Yi word or sentence, whose context supplies the meaning.
The earliest reliably dated surviving Yi inscription is on the Chenghua Bell, dated 1485. Earlier examples on stone, bronze, pottery, and bone have been reported, but their dating or identification is less secure.
How did the Liangshan form develop?
It grew from older Yi writing and was standardized to support literacy.
Traditional Yi writing was not uniform: local forms differed in the signs they used, how those signs were oriented, and the direction in which text ran. These writings served scripture and ritual, medicine, genealogy, history, and astrology; bimo, Yi ritual specialists and priests, passed texts across generations.
The standardized Liangshan syllabary developed from traditional Yi ideographs, older signs used in Yi writing. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to improve literacy. It represents the Liangshan dialect, not every Yi language. Traditional Yi ideographs appear not to derive from Han characters used to write Chinese; visual resemblance alone does not prove a historical link.
