What ꇷ means
Not a dependable English meaning by itself. ꇷ represents one syllable; “gur” is the Latin-letter label in the script’s romanization system, not an English gloss. Its interpretation comes from the surrounding Nuosu/Yi word or sentence.
Yi writing has several local traditions, and how the script first arose remains debated. The oldest reliably dated examples include the Chenghua Bell Inscriptions, around 1485. Older forms were preserved in manuscripts by bimo, Yi ritual specialists, for ritual, medical, genealogical, and other purposes. A standardized Liangshan syllabary was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy and schooling.
The standardized Liangshan system draws on older local Yi traditions, including forms historically called Cuan and Wei. It is one regional standard, not a universal writing system for every Yi language. Traditional Yi signs resemble Chinese characters visually, but form a separate writing tradition; they are described as apparently not derived from Chinese Han characters.
Use it in Yi writing or when discussing the script; its reading depends on linguistic context.
Resembling Chinese characters does not make it Chinese text.
