yi syllable luox

Yi Syllable Luox

ꇄ writes the syllable luox in standard Liangshan Yi (Nuosu). Its final x marks a tone, so its value comes from the surrounding spoken word. The modern standard grew from older, regionally varied Yi writing.

What ꇄ means

It represents one spoken syllable in the Liangshan standard. In the Latin-letter transcription luox, the final x marks the secondary-high tone—a pitch pattern, not an x sound. The word around it supplies the meaning.

Older Yi writing varied by region and included signs for words or ideas. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, copied religious, magical, medical, family-history, and literary texts. The earliest widely cited surviving dated inscription is on a bronze bell from 1485; it dates an attested example, not the writing system's origin.

The older Yi writing tradition was also called Cuan or Wei. Unicode describes its older word- or idea-signs as developed in imitation of Chinese writing. The Liangshan standard grew from these signs but assigns one sign to each spoken syllable; it was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to improve literacy and consistency. It serves Liangshan Yi (Nuosu), not every Yi language, and older regional systems differ in signs, sounds, and writing direction.

What does it mean when someone sends ꇄ?

By itself, it has no established general chat-reaction meaning as of 2026.

In Yi text, read it with the surrounding syllables and the writing standard being used. Without that context, ask the sender what word or phrase they meant.

Use it inside Liangshan Yi writing; by itself, it is an unexplained syllable without that language context.

A bare glyph does not tell a reader which Yi word or phrase you mean.
