What ꁺ means
It represents one syllable in the Yi writing system.
Liangshan Yi (Nuosu) uses one character per syllable. Tone means pitch; final x in the standard romanization nbiex marks a higher tone, not another sound. Its word meaning comes from the surrounding Yi text.
Traditional Yi writing (Cuan or Wei) varied regionally, echoed Chinese writing but does not appear derived from Han characters, and served village priests' religious, medical, and genealogical texts. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980; a bronze-bell inscription dated 1485 is the oldest surviving Yi text.
