What ꁹ means
It writes a Nuosu syllable whose Yi Pinyin spelling is nbip.
Yi Pinyin writes Yi syllables with Latin letters for identification and typing. In nbip, nb marks the opening consonant and final p marks a low-falling tone. The spelling tells you how to read the sign; the surrounding word or sentence gives the syllable its meaning.
When did Yi writing begin?
Its origins are older than the surviving records, and remain debated.
Some stone, bronze, pottery, and bone objects have been proposed as earlier examples, but their connection to Yi writing is disputed. The oldest surviving example generally cited is an inscription on a bronze bell dated 1485; Yi manuscripts on paper or sheepskin appear around 1500.
Traditional Yi texts were kept mainly in village manuscripts for religious, magical, medical, genealogical, and other purposes. They were often preserved by bimo, Yi ritual specialists; this was not primarily one shared everyday script used across all Yi communities.
Why does Yi writing have so many forms?
Older Yi writing varied by community; the standard chose Liangshan forms.
The manuscript traditions were related, but not one uniform script: communities used different sets of signs, shapes, orientations, and writing directions. Though they served a writing role similar to Chinese characters, traditional Yi signs are not direct descendants of them.
The standardized Liangshan syllabary—a system in which signs write syllables—was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. ꁹ belongs to that standard; it is not a universal spelling system for every Yi language.

1Why does ꁹ show as a box?
Font coverage. A font without Yi glyphs may show a missing-character box or replacement mark. Use a font that includes Yi characters; a fallback display does not change which character it is.
