What ꁻ means
Use a Yi input method and enter nbie.
Choose an input method that supports standard Yi Pinyin; its nbie entry produces ꁻ. In an ordinary text field, those Latin letters stay as letters and do not become the Yi character on their own.
What does ꁻ mean?
In standard Liangshan Yi, ꁻ writes the syllable for “shoot.”
The standard used in Liangshan is for Nuosu, a variety of the Yi language. The syllable is conventionally written in Latin letters as nbie; that spelling is also the Yi Pinyin input. “Shoot” is its meaning in this language context.
Older Yi writing traditions varied by region in glyphs, writing direction, and repertoire. The earliest securely dated Yi monuments commonly cited are fifteenth-century inscriptions, including a bronze bell from 1485. Some Yi scholars have proposed a link to Neolithic Banpo symbols, but that connection remains contested and the script’s deeper origin is debated.
Yi religious specialists called bimo used traditional writing for religious, magical, medical, and family-lineage texts. The modern Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 to support literacy in one Yi language variety. Yi writing is generally described as an independent local tradition, not a descendant of Han, Tibetan, Burmese, or Tai scripts.
A syllable sign from standard Yi writing; it needs Yi-language context to be read.
