What ꁶ means
In standard Nuosu, ꁶ writes the syllable nbit.
The Liangshan romanization spells it nbit. A Nuosu dictionary gives “leech” as its meaning when it stands alone; inside a longer word, ꁶ contributes a syllable rather than the word’s whole meaning.
Early Yi inscriptions are disputed; surviving Yi texts date to around 1500, which dates the wider writing tradition rather than ꁶ itself. Traditional Yi forms served bimo, Nuosu ritual specialists, in ritual, medical, and genealogical writing. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980; it represents Nuosu, not every Yi language. A 2024 study describes digital Nuosu use mainly for literary expression and teaching, rather than everyday chat.
Someone sent me ꁶ—what does it mean?
It is Nuosu writing; context decides whether it is a word.
If it arrived by itself, ask whether the sender meant the word itself or was showing the character. Without surrounding Nuosu writing, the message does not settle that.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꁶ show as a box?
Your font or app may lack Yi coverage. A font with Yi support, such as Noto Sans Yi or SIL Nuosu, can display it; a missing glyph is a rendering problem, not a different character.
