What ꅾ means
Use a Yi Syllables input layout. Typing the romanized label “nix” on a standard Latin keyboard does not enter ꅾ; the label identifies the syllable but is not an input code.
What does ꅾ mean in Yi?
It represents one syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi. “Nix” is the romanized label for the syllable. Its final x marks the secondary-high tone, a pitch pattern in Liangshan Yi, rather than an English spelling or translation. The word meaning depends on the surrounding Yi text.
One Yi origin story credits Aki with creating the script. A bronze-bell inscription dated 1485 is among the earliest surviving Yi writing; pottery and stone marks have also been proposed as earlier examples. Regional Yi writing traditions differed in their syllable inventories, shapes, and direction. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, copied religious, magical, medical, and genealogical manuscripts within their communities.
The standardized Liangshan script drew on older local forms rather than a reform of Chinese characters. It was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to promote literacy. The syllabary, where each sign represents a syllable, is for the Liangshan dialect; it does not represent every Yi dialect or regional writing tradition. It appears in textbooks, official documents, newspapers, and literature.
Why does ꅾ show as a box?
A font without Yi Syllables coverage cannot draw it. Choose a font with Yi Syllables glyphs; a box is a display problem, not a change in the character’s meaning.
