What ꅼ means
ꅼ is the Nuosu syllable hnut. Nuosu is a Yi language. A 2022 Nuosu word list glosses the entry “deep; beyond the limits.” The romanized reading hnut starts with an n made without vocal-cord vibration, followed by the “oo” in “food,” at a high, level pitch.
Yi writing grew through regional traditions, and its earlier origins remain debated. The earliest securely dated surviving example is an inscription on a bronze bell from 1485. Families of village priests preserved religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts in traditional forms. The Liangshan writing standard drew on these forms; devised in 1974 and formally issued in 1980, it assigns a fixed written sign to each syllable. Liangshan is a Yi region; ꅼ belongs to its Nuosu standard, not every Yi writing tradition or dialect.
