yi syllable njyr

Yi Syllable Njyr

1098/1165

ꑉ is one spoken syllable in the Liangshan Yi writing system used for Nuosu; its exact word meaning depends on the Yi text around it. The modern standard grew from older, regionally varied writing traditions, and a bronze-bell inscription dated 1485 is the earliest securely dated surviving evidence.

What ꑉ means

It writes one spoken syllable; its word sense comes from context.

The standard used for Nuosu (Liangshan Yi) romanizes ꑉ as njyr. As a rough sound guide, nj begins nasally and flows into a voiced, j-like consonant; yr is a buzzy Yi vowel. With no final t, x, or p, the syllable has a level mid tone.

The romanized spelling names a sound, not an English gloss. Yi syllables combine into words, and one syllable can serve different words depending on context. Read ꑉ with the surrounding Yi text.

Why does Yi writing have different forms?

Older Yi writing grew regionally; Liangshan later standardized one form.

Older Yi writing varied by region. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, kept manuscripts about ritual, magic, medicine, and family lineages. The earliest securely dated surviving evidence is an inscription on a bronze bell from 1485; some undated manuscripts may be older.

As of 2026, the surviving record points to regional development over time rather than a single founding event. The Liangshan reform was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy. It standardized one dialect as a phonetic syllabary, where each character writes a spoken syllable, replacing much of the regionally varied, often word-or-idea-based Classical Yi practice. The standard runs left to right; traditional Nuosu texts run right to left. Other Yi traditions remain distinct.

Questions people ask

2

Why does ꑉ appear as a box?

It is a font issue. A font without Yi coverage cannot draw the character, so you may see a missing-glyph box or fallback; switch to a font that supports Yi.

Is there a phone keyboard shortcut for ꑉ?

There is no universal hex shortcut. As of 2026, Unicode documents no built-in hexadecimal entry method for iOS or Android; a Yi-capable keyboard may support it.
