Yi syllable Nyit

1099/1165

ꑊ is one syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi (Nuosu) writing, and by itself has no fixed English translation: its reading and meaning depend on the Yi word around it. In the Latin input notation, nyit marks the high-tone syllable.

What ꑊ means

It is one Yi syllable, not a full translation. In standardized Liangshan Yi writing, used for Nuosu, ꑊ represents the syllable entered in Latin notation as nyit; final -t marks high tone. Its meaning comes from the word and sentence around it.

In oral tradition, one Nuosu origin story links the script with the Aki people. Unicode cites a bronze bell from 1485 as the earliest dated surviving Yi monument. Traditional Yi writing was used for religious, ritual, medical, and genealogical texts passed down by village priests. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy.

Yi writing has regional traditions with different inventories, shapes, and writing directions; Liangshan is one standardized tradition. Unicode describes traditional Yi ideographs—characters used for words or ideas—as apparently not derived from Han Chinese characters.

What does ꑊ mean when someone sends it?

It usually identifies Yi text, not a mood. If the sender is writing Yi or Nuosu, read ꑊ as part of their word. Sent alone, it gives no reliable clue to the sender’s tone or intent; ask what the surrounding Yi word or phrase means.

How do I type ꑊ?

Use a Yi/Nuosu keyboard or Unicode input, then check font support. On a Yi/Nuosu layout, enter nyit and select that syllable; final -t marks high tone. In a Unicode hex-input tool, enter A44A.

If it appears as a square, the active font lacks Yi coverage.

Neutral in Yi writing; opaque in chat when the recipient does not read Yi.

Do not infer a mood from one isolated ꑊ.

Why does ꑊ show as a square?

A square means the active font lacks a Yi glyph. Use a font with Yi coverage; the character itself is still present.
