What ꑋ means
It writes the Nuosu syllable nyix. Its word-level meaning comes from the surrounding sentence.
In the Latin-letter spelling nyix, final x marks the secondary-high tone, a pitch pattern, and is not pronounced. If ꑋ arrives alone, ask for the surrounding Yi text before translating.
How did the Liangshan standard develop?
It grew from older regional Yi writing. One Yi tradition credits Aki with devising it during the Tang dynasty; the oldest surviving example is a bronze bell inscription dated 1485. Older forms varied; bimo (Yi ritual specialists) used manuscripts for ritual, medicine, magic and genealogy.
The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 to improve literacy. It covers Liangshan Yi, not all Yi languages.
The script's origin and link to Chinese writing are debated: Unicode says older signs appear not derived from Chinese characters; other accounts discuss influence on their shapes.
