What ꎆ means
It contributes the rre syllable to a Nuosu word. The letters rre are its label in the Latin-letter Liangshan Yi romanization. On its own, ꎆ identifies one syllable of writing; the surrounding word supplies the context needed for translation.
How did Yi writing become the Liangshan standard?
It grew out of varied local Yi traditions. Traditional Yi writing, historically known as Cuan or Wei, took many local forms. Village ritual specialists passed down texts about religion, healing, magic, and family histories. One tradition credits Aki with devising the script during the Tang period. Some scholars also identify older Guizhou stone, bronze, pottery, and bone objects as Yi graphs; the earliest surviving monumental example named by Unicode is a bronze-bell inscription dated 1485.
The modern Liangshan standard grew from traditional forms. A Latin-letter system for writing Liangshan Yi was introduced in 1956; the traditional-script standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It represents the Liangshan dialect, not all Yi languages.
How to type ꎆ
Use a Yi input method and select the matching syllable. With Microsoft's Windows Yi input method, enter the Latin-letter spelling rre, then choose ꎆ from the candidates. This method turns syllable spellings into character suggestions instead of assigning every syllable one ordinary key. As of 2024, this was Microsoft's documented Windows route; as of 2026, SIL lists a Yi keyboard for the syllable characters, not the separate Yi radicals.
In Liangshan Yi, ꎆ is ordinary syllable writing. Alone in a message without Yi text, it reads as a sample from the script.
By itself, ꎆ gives a syllable, not enough context to translate a word.
