What ꎄ means
It represents one syllable in the Liangshan Nuosu writing system. Yi Pinyin, a Latin-letter spelling system, writes it as rret; the final t marks high tone (a higher pitch), not a consonant pronounced at the end.
The sign contributes one spoken syllable inside a word; the surrounding Yi text gives it lexical meaning. Alone, ꎄ leaves the message incomplete.
The Liangshan standard grew from local Yi writing
Nuosu tradition credits the culture hero Aki with creating Yi writing. The earliest surviving examples include inscriptions carved on monuments, among them a bronze bell inscription dated 1485. Older local sign sets varied by place and appear in religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts—records of family ancestry.
To make literacy easier, a Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It selected a teachable set of syllable signs from older Liangshan forms and represents that dialect, not every Yi language or earlier text tradition. Older forms vary in sign shapes, orientation, and writing direction; the standard usually runs left to right.
What if someone sends ꎄ alone?
Ask for the surrounding Yi text or a translation.
A person who reads the standardized Liangshan form can sound it out in a word; outside that reading context, a single syllable does not reveal the intended message.

Questions people ask
2Is ꎄ a Chinese character?
No. It belongs to the Yi syllable writing system used for Nuosu. Traditional Yi signs that stand for words are not considered derived from Han characters, the characters used in Chinese writing; visual resemblance alone does not establish a historical link.
Why does ꎄ show as a box?
When a box appears in place of ꎄ, the active font lacks this Yi glyph. Choose a font with Yi coverage.
