yi syllable qu

Yi Syllable Qu

ꐎ is the Nuosu Yi syllable qu; context gives its reading. A 2023 study records a Liangshan ritual specialist using it for “group” in Weixin.

What ꐎ means

It is the Nuosu Yi syllable qu, not a whole message. Yi Pinyin writes Nuosu syllables with Latin letters.

Weixin (WeChat) is a Chinese messaging app. A 2023 study reports one phone could not display Yi text. If this glyph is blank or boxed, check for a Yi font. SIL Yi Keyboard 2.0 names Noto Sans Yi and Nuosu SIL.

The earliest securely dated Yi inscription is on a 1485 bronze bell. Village priests used varied local forms for ritual, medicine, magic, and genealogy. For literacy, the Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and made official in 1980 for the Nuosu dialect.

Why does ꐎ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
