What ꎌ means
ꎌ is the rrurx syllable sign in standardized Liangshan Yi.
rrurx is its label, not an English translation. The sign marks a syllable; surrounding Yi text supplies the word-level meaning.
How old is Yi writing?
Yi writing has a long history, but its early record is uneven. Some accounts report purported Yi-script inscriptions from the Western Han (206 BC–AD 9). The earliest surviving monument singled out in Unicode’s description is a bronze bell bearing inscriptions, dated 1485.
Village priests used traditional forms for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. Local glyph inventories and writing directions differed, so these practices were not one everyday script used in the same way across all Yi communities.
How did Liangshan Yi become standardized?
The standardized Liangshan form was devised in 1974 and made official in 1980.
It supported literacy in one Yi dialect through schooling, textbooks, literature, and newspapers; it did not replace every Yi tradition. The standard assigns a syllable to each sign, while some classical texts used meaning-based signs and locally varying glyphs. Cuan is a historical name for earlier Yi writing traditions connected to this history, not the name of this particular syllable.
In standard Liangshan Yi text, ꎌ works as one syllable; alone, its meaning depends on whether the reader knows Yi.
A bare ꎌ may leave someone who cannot read Yi unsure what you mean.

1Why does ꎌ appear as a box?
The active font lacks a glyph for this character. A font with Yi coverage can display it; the empty square is a missing-glyph marker, not a reading.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
