yi syllable rux

Yi Syllable Rux

ꏕ records a Liangshan Yi syllable, written “rux” in the standard romanization; final x marks the secondary high pitch pattern. The standard is for Liangshan Yi, whose speakers call themselves Nuosu, not every Yi variety.

What ꏕ means

It records one spoken syllable, not a whole idea.

Older Yi writing varied by region; stone inscriptions survive from the thirteenth century, though the script’s origin remains debated. The Liangshan standard drew on traditions historically called Cuan or Wei in Chinese, and was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. Village ritual specialists copied religious, medical, magical, and genealogical texts.

Why does ꏕ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
