What ꌑ means
It represents one syllable, not a complete word by itself.
Liangshan Yi has a sign for each allowed spoken syllable. Yi Pinyin is its Latin-letter spelling system: the input spelling sax represents ꌑ, and final x marks the secondary-high tone, a pitch pattern on the spoken syllable.
Where did Yi writing come from?
It belongs to a modern standard built from older local Yi writing.
A Nuosu origin story credits a figure named Aki with creating the script. The earliest securely dated surviving Yi inscription is on a bronze bell from 1485. Reports of earlier inscriptions on stone, bronze, pottery, and bone are disputed; they do not date this individual syllable.
Traditional Yi writing had many local forms and directions; village priests passed down religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts in it rather than using one shared everyday script. The older tradition is also called Classical Yi, Cuan, or Wei. A Latin-letter scheme for Liangshan Yi was introduced in 1956; the standardized syllabary was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It writes only Liangshan Yi, also called Nuosu. In a 2024 study, 22 Nuosu adults used digital Yi mainly for literary or artistic work and teaching, not interpersonal messaging.
This belongs to written Liangshan Yi; its word meaning depends on Yi context.
If the recipient does not read Liangshan Yi, ꌑ alone may be opaque; use it within a Yi phrase or explain it.

2Does the standardized Yi script cover every Yi dialect?
No. This syllabary is designed for Liangshan Yi, also called Nuosu; it is not a single standard for every Yi dialect.
Why does ꌑ show as a box?
That is a font-coverage problem: the text still contains ꌑ, but the active font cannot draw it. Choose a font that supports Unicode Yi syllables.
