yi syllable shu

Yi syllable shu

957/1165

ꎼ represents one syllable in the standardized Yi script, romanized as “shu”; by itself, that spelling does not give a complete translation. The meaning comes from the Yi word around it. In modern Yi writing, an input method can enter the syllable and offer matching characters.

What ꎼ means

It is one syllable in standardized Yi writing.

“Shu” is the Yi Pinyin spelling for this syllable; it gives the reading, not an English translation. The word around it supplies the meaning. The standardized Yi script represented here targets Liangshan Yi, also called Nuosu, rather than every Yi dialect.

The oldest securely dated surviving Yi inscription is the Chenghua Bell inscription, from 1485. The modern standardized Liangshan syllabary was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980.

How did Yi writing change?

The Liangshan standard represents spoken syllables; older Yi writing varied locally.

Traditional Yi writing varied by locality and was preserved mainly by village priests for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. Much of its classical literature used signs for words or ideas and included alternate forms.

The modern Liangshan syllabary uses one sign per spoken syllable and supports teaching and wider publication. This character belongs to that standardized system.

Within standardized Yi text, this is ordinary writing; outside it, it is a specialized syllable sign.

To translate it, ask which Yi word or passage it came from.

Worth knowing

  • In Yi Pinyin, “shu” has midlevel tone: it has no final t, p, or x. Those ending letters mark tones in other syllable spellings; they are not extra syllables.
