What ꎺ means
The name ‘shut’ is a romanization label, not an English translation.
Before modern standardization, regional Yi forms varied. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, used them for religious, medical, magical, and genealogical texts. The earliest surviving Yi inscription generally cited is on a bronze bell dated 1485; earlier-origin claims remain debated. In the 1970s, the Liangshan/Nuosu standard selected forms from older Yi scripts to support literacy.
