What ꎻ means
It represents one Yi syllable, not a complete word.
In the standard Liangshan naming system, “shux” is a romanized label for this syllable; its final x marks the secondary-high tone, a distinct higher pitch. It is a sound-and-tone spelling, not an English translation.
Yi writing predates the standardized script. Earlier records include pottery and stone, and a bronze bell dated 1485 is the earliest surviving monumental example. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, transmitted locally varied forms in religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts.
How did Yi writing become standardized?
Local traditions became a standardized script for Liangshan literacy.
Traditional Yi writing varied by region, lineage, signs used, and writing direction. The standardized form was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy. It represents the Liangshan dialect, not every Yi variety.
Unicode describes earlier Yi signs as modeled on Chinese writing; they developed into the modern Yi system, where each character represents a syllable.
Ordinary within Yi writing; outside Yi text, it needs context to be understood.
