What ꄩ means
It represents one spoken syllable in Yi writing.
Here tot is a Latin-letter transcription, not an English translation. Its final t marks high tone: the syllable is spoken at a higher pitch. Neighboring Yi syllables help form a word or phrase.
How did Yi writing change over time?
Modern Yi writing standardizes syllable signs; older regional forms varied.
The earliest securely dated Yi inscriptions date to the 15th century, including the Chenghua Bell Inscriptions. Claims of older writing on bronze, stone, pottery, and bone have disputed origins or dates. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, transmitted manuscripts across generations for rituals, family histories, medicine, and other learned work.
A standardized Liangshan script was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to represent one dialect and support literacy. It draws on older local traditions but is not a universal script for every Yi language. A classical form may not correspond one-to-one with a modern standardized syllable.
Clear to readers of the relevant Nuosu variety; opaque by itself to readers who do not read that Yi variety.
Do not translate one syllable without its surrounding Yi text.

Your font may not include Yi syllables. Use a font with Yi-script coverage; the missing-glyph box is a rendering fallback, not the character itself.
