What ꁡ means
ꁡ writes the Nuosu syllable bbap. In the standardized Liangshan romanization, it sounds roughly like “bah,” with the voice starting low and falling. The Nuosu example bbap ga means “village”; ꁡ supplies the syllable, while the complete word carries the translation.
As of 2026-09-12, the oldest reliably dated examples often cited are fifteenth-century inscriptions on Chenghua-era bells in Guizhou; earlier origins remain debated. Older Yi writing traditions served bimo, Yi ritual specialists, who transmitted manuscripts about scripture, legends, history, medicine, and astrology.
The modern Liangshan standard selected forms from older Northern Yi traditions. It regularized regionally varied manuscripts, sometimes written with signs for whole ideas, into a syllabary: each sign represents a spoken syllable. Used in public and education, this standard is related to older Yi writing but is not interchangeable with every regional tradition.
