What ꁞ means
ꁞ is one Yi syllable; “bbat” is its reading, not a translation.
For the Nuosu language, a Yi language spoken in Liangshan, “bbat” is the romanized syllable label; its final t marks a high tone. The surrounding Yi text supplies the word’s meaning.
The earliest securely dated surviving examples of Yi writing date to the 15th century; an early example is a bronze bell dated 1485. Claims of an earlier origin exist, but the script’s origin date and birthplace remain debated. Traditional Yi writing had regional forms and served religious, magical, medical, and genealogical purposes, including texts kept by village priests.
The modern standard is based on a Liangshan form of traditional Yi. It was standardized in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy and public writing, including textbooks and newspapers. Regional and classical traditions are broader, and people familiar with one form may not readily read another.
