What does ꊅ mean in Nuosu writing?
It writes one syllable within a Nuosu word.
In Yi Pinyin, a romanized spelling system used for Nuosu, the syllable is written wuo; its unmarked tone stays at a steady middle pitch. In a Nuosu word, neighboring syllables show how it contributes to the larger meaning.
How did Liangshan Yi writing become standardized?
It grew from local writing traditions into a public Nuosu standard.
The earliest surviving Yi-script example is a bronze-bell inscription dated 1485. Before standardization, village priests used local Yi forms for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts.
The modern Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 to support literacy, bringing Nuosu writing into public education, reference works, newspapers, literature, notices, and subtitles. It grew from Traditional Yi, an older Yi writing system, but was not intended to unify every Yi dialect. Han-style radicals—components used to organize Chinese characters—helped readers look up Yi syllables; Chinese punctuation was also borrowed.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꊅ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
